Kafka's short stories are the best place to test his world: a few pages, one strange situation, and then something that will not leave you until nightfall. “The Judgment,” “The Metamorphosis,” “In the Penal Colony,” “A Hunger Artist” and the short parables sit together here, showing how Kafka moves from one plain sentence to a philosophical proposition.
If you do not have time for the long novels, start here. Each story is a complete world, and each ending is a door left deliberately ajar.
For a reading group, take one story at a time. Kafka's short fiction rewards disagreement more than consensus.
